"Everyone is immortal in ways they can never experience" | Readers' favourite quotes

Updated: Oct 2

I've never been one for dwelling too much on quotes. Perhaps it was the weight of the history of this book which got me carried away. But reading a quote like "Everyone is immortal in ways they can never experience" at the end of a lost leather journal with no discernable origins really stuck with me. Especially when the book claims at the same time that I am the reader and the author. It connected me to myself, this mysterious story and the rest of humanity in one vertigo inducing sentence.

It perhaps took on even more meaning for me when I considered the power of the act of writing itself. When an author commits their thoughts to paper, they are creating a tangible manifestation of their consciousness. Each sentence, each paragraph, is a fragment of their soul, preserved for posterity. Through the written word, an author can share their experiences, their ideas, and their passions with generations who are not even born yet. In this way, the writer becomes immortal. Their words, once confined to the pages of a book, can be shared, discussed, and debated for centuries to come. They can inspire, challenge, and move people in ways that the author themselves may never have imagined.

But the immortality of the written word extends beyond the author's intentions. It is a testament to the enduring power of human thought and expression. A book, once published, becomes a part of the collective consciousness, shaping the way we think, feel, and understand the world.

Whoever wrote "This was written for you" has ensured, by leaving their words behind, that a part of them will live on long after they are gone. Their legacy, etched into the pages of the book, is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.

But then I started to think about the quote from my own perspective, that of the humble reader. It is not just the writer who achieves immortality through their words. These words live on, in a unique manifestation through me. I may even behave differently now because I have read them. Every person, even someone whose lack of achievement could challenge my own, leaves a mark on the world that will endure long after they are gone. Our actions, our choices, and our words have the power to shape the future in ways that we can never fully comprehend.

As the story goes on to tell us, this quote is a reminder that our lives are interconnected in ways that we cannot fully understand. It is a call to live with purpose, to make a difference, and to leave a legacy that will inspire future generations.
