So little is known about the origin of this book that it is hard to know how to even begin filling a blog post with the details of its history. So perhaps it is best to focus only on what has happened since it was discovered by us.
The journal was found in a safe after the death of a book collector and next to a number of other well known books. While many of the books were clearly very valuable, the contents of the journal told a story that nobody had ever heard of. Unlike all the other books in the collection, which were very well catalogued, any information about where the journal came from was non-existent. As the family believed it to be valuable, they contacted a number of book dealers only to be told that they had no information about the story or the journal.
The journal was then largely forgotten about and eventually rediscovered by some friends of the family who transcribed it and started leaving copies of the story around the world for other people to find. This was a bit of fun, an attempt to give other people the same experience they had had when the original journal was discovered. It eventually led to more people asking questions about the origins of the book and a relative of an author, who had known the deceased book collector, got in touch with a few suggestions about where it may have come from. Usually, this would be cause for celebration but these revelations came at exactly the same time that a small cultish movement appeared, mirroring very closely that of Poppy's cult in the story. Other readers began to claim (as the book encourages them to believe) that they wrote the book by reading it. This news made the family who owned the journal nervous and reluctant to reveal themselves or any of the revelations given to them about the journal. To begin with, this was just to avoid the risk of anyone attempting to steal the journal or make unwanted advances towards them but it has evolved into a general feeling that the origins of the book are untraceable and should remain that way.
As more people became aware of the journal and the family began to understand its value, they decided to take rather better care of it by keeping it in the safe where it was originally found.
Which brings us here. Very soon (1st November 2024) the first ebook transcript of the book will be made available to the general public. The story has already created, in almost equal quantities, chaos, confusion, wonderment and admiration. Now it is to be released to the world, who knows where the story of this remarkable story will take us next.
